Aprilia RS125: Pre-MOT & Roadworthiness Checklist

In the UK, the MOT test ensures your 2-stroke is safe for the road. This guide covers the specific areas where the RS125 often fails:

• Lighting & Electrics:

  • The Power Valve Check: Ensure the RAVE solenoid isn't causing a battery drain that dims the headlight at idle.

  • Indicators: Must flash at the correct rate; check for "corroded" connectors in the rear loom.

• Brakes & Suspension:

  • Fork Seals: Any oil on the stanchions is an immediate fail. Check for pitting on the chrome.

  • Brake Binding: Spin the wheels; the Brembo calipers on these bikes often seize if the pistons aren't cleaned regularly.

• Engine & Exhaust:

  • The "Exhaust Leak": Ensure the manifold spring-mount is tight. Significant "spooge" leaking from the cylinder join can be an emissions or noise fail.

  • Chain & Sprockets: Check for "hooked" teeth and ensure the chain tension is within the 25–30mm play limit.

• The "Steering Head" Test: Lift the front end and check for "notchy" bearings—a common issue due to the aggressive riding position and wheelie landings.

i cant really tell you how to do a thorough mot check , but ill
tell you what id do before an mot , i rarely have a failure.

in no particular order

check for play , wear , damage and correct adjustment :
check tyres
check chain
check sprocket
check cush drive for play
check rear and front brake pads and measure discs and top up brake fluids
check brake operation
check wheel bearings for play
check exhaust system over for leaks , holes etc
check forks over for damage . bend or pitting to chrome
check forks for correct operation
check fork seals for wear / leakage
check rear shock for leaks and any play up and down and side to side
check all indicators and bulbs are working
check number plate for damage
check free operation of steering
check steering head bearings for play
check speedo and clocks all work and illuminate
check all switch gear
no obvious leaks anywhere over the bike ?
runs and idles well
give it a thorough clean (id not like to mot a filthy bike)
make sure all cables etc are adjusted correct
generally clean and tidy overall well maintained bikes pass more easily
which is obvious but i am amazed at the state of some bikes i see at mot stations .
