Aprilia RS125 Starter Motor Removal & Repair Guide
The starter motor on the Rotax 122 engine is a common failure point, often manifesting as a "clicking" sound or a complete refusal to turn over despite a healthy battery.
Access & Removal:
Located at the front of the engine, tucked behind the radiator and exhaust downpipe.
The Difficulty: Access is tight; you often need to loosen the radiator mounts and move it forward (without disconnecting hoses) to gain enough clearance for the two 5mm Allen bolts holding the motor.
The "Bendix" Drive: When you remove the motor, be careful not to lose the starter bendix (the gear that throws out to engage the flywheel). It should be inspected for chipped teeth or "stickiness" caused by old, thickened grease.
Internal Troubleshooting:
Brushes: Most failures are simply worn carbon brushes. These can be replaced individually without buying a new motor.
Commutator: If the motor spins slowly, the copper commutator inside may be "clogged" with carbon dust. Cleaning it with fine sandpaper often restores full torque.
Re-installation Tip: Apply a small amount of high-temperature copper grease to the splines and the O-ring seal to prevent water ingress and future seizing.
