Aprilia RS 125: RAVE Valve Removal & Installation Guide
This post serves as a technical walkthrough for the most critical maintenance task on a Rotax 122/123 engine: servicing the exhaust power valve.
The Component: The RAVE (Rotax Adjustable Variable Exhaust) valve is a sliding blade that sits in the exhaust port. It is essential for providing both low-end torque and high-end power.
The Removal Process:
Disconnect the cable from the solenoid (under the tank).
Unbolt the two socket-head bolts holding the valve housing to the cylinder.
The "Carbon Lock": Often, the valve will be stuck due to carbon deposits. The guide suggests careful prying to avoid damaging the cylinder face.
The Installation Process:
Orientation is Critical: The beveled/slanted side of the blade must face down (towards the exhaust outlet). If installed upside down, the piston will hit the blade, causing an instant engine seizure.
Gasket & O-Ring: Always use a new green O-ring and paper gasket to prevent "spooge" (unburnt 2-stroke oil) from leaking onto the engine.
Spring Tension: Ensure the return spring is seated correctly so the valve closes fully when the solenoid is deactivated.
Maintenance Interval: For peak performance, the blade should be removed and cleaned with a scotch-brite pad or carb cleaner every 1,000–2,000 miles
